Talk: House Music of Horrors

by Lie Vera on Wednesday, 19th October 2011

Local dance scene pushers and independent PR collective, Deck Time Stories, wonder why despite being the first genre to infiltrate the local dance scene in the mid ’90s, house ain’t receiving the kind of recognition it deserves.

Design: Khanvas

by Alif Omar Mahfix on Tuesday, 18th October 2011

“Art is what you can get away with” – Andy Warhol.

So quotes Khanvas when asked about what art is to him. The saying resonates with him so potently that one of his paintings (see JUICE September’s Last Look) is a reflection of the artist’s philosophy, which is the artistic ethos he has adopted since. Looking at his appearance, that of a tattooed punk rocker, and demeanour, that of a chilled out Rastafarian, you’d never think he was artist. Just as the quote says, an artist can get away with anything.

Carolina Herrera’s 212 VIP Men - NY Scent in KL Smog

by Alif Omar Mahfix on Monday, 17th October 2011

New York, New York, concrete jungle where dreams are made of if one singer’s words were to be believed. This is where culture, fashion, and music fester and grow, where young people make a name out of themselves and become VIPs - just as Carolina Herrera had when she moved to New York from Caracas, Venezuela and formed her eponymous fashion label, Carolina Herrera, Ltd. back in 1981. With her fragrance 212 VIP Men, newly available in Kuala Lumpur, Carolina is set to bring that distinctive NY scent reeking of exclusivity and sensuality to our shores.

Above & Beyond: Therapeutic Tunes

by Astika Suprapto on Friday, 14th October 2011

Above & Beyond are undoubtedly the highest ranking dance music trio today. Year after year, their sound keeps redefining trance. The trio – Tony McGuinness, Jono Grant and Paavo Siljamamaki – have won our hearts by staying true to theirs, best exemplified in their latest album Group Theraphy, which sees them continuing the tradition of churning out uplifting and melodic sounds. Singles ‘Thing Called Love’ and ‘Sun & Moon’ are monster hits that have been making the rounds on airwaves worldwide. In line with the release of the new album, the group is set to introduce their new concept show to fans worldwide – including us! Called the Group Therapy Tour, the concert is an orgasmic audio-visual DJ set that is as innovative as it gets. Despite not being able to join Paavo and Jono on their upcoming trip to KL this 26 October, Tony spared some time with JUICE to let us in on what Group Therapy is all about and the advantages of being a dance trio…

Art Vs Science: Credibly Silly

by Alif Omar Mahfix on Thursday, 13th October 2011

Parlez-vous Francais? Pardon our French, we don’t speak it either. But we sure did get our dancing jig on when Art Vs Science sung those words on their single of the same name. The trio – consisting Jim Finn, Dan Mac, and Dan W. – has been making their rounds in the land of down under as well as internationally, going from performing at dingy clubc to sold out concerts in the span of just three years. Shunning the digital in favour of live instruments, the band is a rarity in dance. That isn’t the only thing they eschew for something else though, the band takes absurdity over seriousness. JUICE caught up with Jim and Dan Mac before their appearance at Heineken Green Room…

Interview: Nosaj Thing

by Astika Suprapto on Wednesday, 12th October 2011

When IDM goes home these days, it goes to Los Angeles where Low End Theory anchors its underground, and the likes of Flying Lotus and Daedelus are attempting more avant experiments. In the midst of all that, you can’t miss Nosaj Thing, the brainchild of Jason Chung. Sonically inclined and unabashedly geeky, Nosaj (Jason spelt backwards) has been steadily designing a palette of glitchy beats, textual intricacies and buzzing synths that’s equally informed by dub and hip hop. It sounded awesome on his Views/Octopus EP, his debut LP Drift, and just about any other night at Low End Theory, as much as it did at his live showing at Heineken’s Secret Gallery. No better time to question him on computer software, meditation and being this far away from his bedroom…
