That’s Café JB

Fairytales are made of this….
It’s hard to believe that you’re in JB when you step through white French doors into the storybook interior. Initially established as a cosy escape for friends to gather and hang out in, in 2 years this cute little outlet has grown into a much-talked about haunt among many outside its regular circle. A team effort, with friends Joey, TC, Halim and Bee adding their own inimitable touches to help make That’s Café a product of love, mismatched antique chairs and tables add character to the space while toys and junkyard knick-knacks put the finishing touches to the dreamlike existence.

Artistic hub overlooking the Straits….
To the benefit of this unassuming city, many Johor Bahru pre-war locations have been left untouched, Lost Malaya among them. An art gallery-cum-lounge housed within a double-storey colonial bungalow overlooking the Tebrau Straits, Lost Malaysia was founded by husband-and-wife team Chris Thompson and Alisa Lamlertkittikul. Art and photo exhibitions by local talent are held regularly in the gallery (including that of Chris’ who is a professional photographer who’s worked for The Amazing Race Asia and Biggest Loser Asia), while the lounge upstairs offers a sunset backdrop to beer drinking. Complementing the art house vibe is the JOHO Concept Store. Headquarters for a group of young, local designers JOHO is also a hub for lomo and fixie enthusiasts.

Music and dance clubhouse
Broadway Acres is located within the suburbs of Ara Damansara (near the Subang Airport). The first thing you’ll notice upon stepping into this 3-storey performance space/bar-lounge, jamming studio and dance studio is that the owner, David Lee, has a Michael Jackson fixation. As it turns out, David also managed MJ’s global merchandise range during the gloved one’s golden days.

Corporate art space managed by artists
With 4 floors and a huge lobby area, Map KL stands as an art space developed by Sunrise Berhad. But the gentrification stops there. The management of Map has been taken over by such forces of change like Arteri Malaysia and labDNA, and they understand that it’s equally about the indie scene as it is about corporate events.

All-day diner that’s the bee’s knees….
Jaya One is one of those places where you can never decide where to hang because there are just so many places under one roof to choose from. Once you’ve experienced The Bee it could be the only place you step into when you head to Jaya One. The reasons: the food is good, the booze (and food) doesn’t put a hole in your wallet and it’s a comfortable place to hang out with friends. Situated next to IACT College and below PJ Live Arts Centre, everything from the brick walls to the wooden furniture and warm lighting tells you to “hang back”. Living up to it’s name, The Bee is often swarming with customers.

Sukeats Chee and Weiyeng Khoo are the big boys behind Wheel Love. Budget friendly KL escape in the city
It’s not like we’d turn down an offer to pad up in some swank 5-star luxury hotel room but the appeal of chain hotels with identikit furnishings and functional politeness are long over. These days people like us are looking for something small, charming, and most of all unique. Oh, and lest we forget, affordable. 41 Berangan is gorgeous guest house located off the buzz of Changkat Bukit Bintang and already a choice pick for budget conscious guests both local and international. Named after it’s location, which aptly translates as ‘day dreaming’, this is the perfect resthouse for those looking for a cheap, modern and centrally located escape. To heck with the stereotypical hotels!

Located on the continually evolving Changkat Bukit Bintang, Daikanyama looks like it was lifted straight out of Tokyo, with its tiny bamboo garden and glassed display yakitori kitchenette. A hip area located in the Japanese capital’s Shibuya prefecture, Daikanyama also means “let’s drink, everyone” in Chinese. [more »]
