Parties, gigs, and a Japanese movie screening — it’s the weekend of 5 to 7 February ’16. Okay, there’s nothing of interest on Sunday but hey, it is the weekend before Chinese New Year, so the city is going to be a little quieter than usual.

SLA Pres. Re.You (Mobilee, Moon Harbour, Cocoon / GER) Live in KL

re.you_

To those who pay more attention to pop music, Marius Maier — who goes by the moniker of Re.You — is the man responsible for giving Lana Del Rey’s ‘Video Games’ a house rework ripe for the dancefloor. To dance fans, Maier is popularly known for his single ‘Work’, which he produced together with fellow label-mate Rampa. His story of taking a swim in an overcrowded pool of DJs is painful but interesting — like he realised his talents only after suffering through a knee injury kind of painful; Maier was a promising basketball player before said injury led him to discover production during recovery. Suffice it to say, he persevered, obviously — in DJing that is. Now, Maier is making his way to KL this weekend to perform at Pisco alongside Frizz & Kutty and Rimka for the third week of Sound Love Affair, making him the club night series’ first international act of this year.

Da Funkie Junkie, Bernie & Friends

It’s okay to giggle at the name of the event — we did it too. Humour aside, Da Funkie Junkie, Bernie & Friends mean business. Musical business. This night is dedicated to two individuals whose music created the birth of disco, garage, and house — David Mancuso and Larry Levan. Ease into the weekend with tunes from the previously mentioned genres while enjoying an artisanal cocktail or three. There are special drink promotions for ladies too  — take note!

Salsa Friday @ Paradox

Salsa is a fun way to burn calories or to be in closed proximity with the person you like without being labelled as a creep. However, if you have creep-like tendencies, that’s a different story. Nevertheless, salsa is a dance everyone should attempt doing at least once in their life. Contrary to popular belief, it’s pretty simple to learn albeit one’s coordination has to be as smooth as that of synchronised swimmers… but practice makes perfect! Join the class at Paradox to learn a new move — it’s usually a full house so we’d advise getting there early to save yourself from not being allowed in.

Saturday Night Live: Shh… Diam!

Shh...Diam!

Happycore band Shh…Diam! is an incredibly likable bunch of misfits. They have a knack for melding humour to make pop music that’s danceable and sometimes provocative, such is the case of their excellent album Attack of the Kongketron. The foursome will be playing a Merdekarya show along with Hana Halilintar and down.to.earth, while DJ G will spin at the afterparty.

Date Saturday 6 February ’16
Time 7pm

The Weekend Japanese Film Show Pres. About the Pink Sky

about-the-pink-sky-image-8

About the Pink Sky is about a teenager named Izumi who finds a wallet filled with cash, but instead of returning it to its owner, she figures she should give the money to someone who’s in need; namely a friend of hers who’s in a financial rut. She eventually hands over the wallet to its rightful owner — a wealthy man named Sato. But after he realises that a large sum of his money is missing, rather than asking Izumi to pay him back he suggests that she helps console a hospitalised friend of his by creating a newspaper that’d make readers happy as opposed to saddened by the state of the world. Judging by the synopsis, there’s lots of cheese and sugar in this movie’s recipe. We dig it.
