Even though Soulfest Asia unfortunately did not pan out as advertised, we will still have a dedicated day of celebrating hip hop and r’n’b in KL. Just as reported in our October story on the Raising the Bar (RTB) crew, the second Raising The Bar Festival is finally returning early next year with an impressive lineup of performers.

You can expect to see some familiar names and faces from the local hip hop and r’n’b scene such as Kartel head honcho Joe Flizzow, SonaOne, and Kayda. But there are some talents on the bill who aren’t traditionally ‘hip hop’ that are worthy of excitement and anticipation as well. Take for instance jazz-hip hop fusion band Bassment Syndicate, electronica musician and Jin Hackman’s right hand man Dae Kim, HOAX member and vocalist ZSYIA, and The Wknd Sessions Recording Fund winner Orang Malaya. Additionally, there will be DJ sets to keep spirits lifted and the festival vibes afloat by way of the likes of Indiego & Co., Naufal & I-Sky, Arabyrd, and making a big debut on stage is the Ta-ku-loving beatmaker Emir Hermono.

Also to ensure that RTB’s sophomore festival is one of the most talked about event, the team has assembled a stellar roster of regional and international acts too. Starting from the Lion City, showing off their chops will be the fascinatingly depressive sounds of multigenred F ∆ U X E, self-deprecating hip hop crew MHC, as well as the much touted The.XS Collective member and rapper Mean. Staten Island, ATL, and Chiraq-informed grimy rapper (and Kiko Mizuhara devotee), Young Queenz of Hong Kong, and Okasian of South Korea — whom you may recognise from his appearance on Keith Ape’s ‘It G Ma’ — will be rounding up the regional lineup. Bring forth dem killer whales.

Lastly, coming from the States, producer B. Bravo will be supplying some funk-tinged r’n’b that’s bound to have everyone bouncing on the dancefloor. And last but not least, former Das Racist member Heems will be returning to KL, hopefully causing everyone to sing along to ‘Sometimes’.

The second RTB festival is shaping up to be bigger and better. Get excited!
