Vans x Madness ‘It’s a State of Mind’ Collection is Inspired by The Shining

This collaborative collection mostly represents the aesthetic of Shawn Yue — the Hong Kong star who founded Madness. Shawn’s idea was to construct sneakers that allow flexibility. He did so by inserting a tongue gusset for the Sk8-Mid, which gives its wearer the option of either having the shoelaces on or without while the Sk8-Hi features an additional zipper at the back to make it easier to put them on. Yeezus knows sometimes we take far too long to wear our shoes.
Aside from convenience, these shoes also feature a quote on their outsoles that reads “All work and no play makes you mad” — a line that was derived from the proverb made famous by The Shining; “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. The Sk8-Hi features a gorgeous grey suede (as seen above), however, the Sk8-Mid has our hearts. Just look at it (below). Also, to our halal-loving audience, while these shoes are beautiful, it does contain pigskin material, so perhaps love it from afar.
The Vans x Madness collection will be available at Sole What, The Gardens from Saturday 18 February ’17 onwards. The Sk8-Hi retails at RM359 while the Sk8-Mid is priced at RM399. Both pairs are available from sizes US7 to US11 in limited quantities.
