VIDEO: .gif’s ‘godspeed’

Singaporean downtempo electronica duo .gif have released a music video for their single ‘godspeed’ from their imminent debut LP soma. The band pays tribute to a Singaporean film — 1999’s Eating Air — that is much beloved by them. The film was billed as “a motorcycle kung-fu love story,” but as explained by .gif, it carried themes of “displaced ambition and entrapment.” The music video envisions the life of protagonist Boy and his once vivacious and audacious best friend Ah Gu going for a night ride on a motorcycle. But just as it is told in the lyrics, “Brother, you were the best of us and it should have been me/ And you’ve never been heavier on the pillion seat,” Ah Gu has lost his willful spirit, finally hampered by reality.
